Unattended Water Damage
A water damage incident will provide the perfect environment for mold growth if left unattended for any period of time. The Institute of Medicine found through their study, mold in high humidity, damp homes, and commercial buildings, can result in serious health effects for many people. A runny nose, sneezing, coughing, congestion, aggravation of asthma, sore throat, or inflammation of the sinuses can be the result of continuous exposure to mold spores. People with compromised immune system, young children and people with asthma or allergies can be at much higher risk.
Water Damage is Time Sensitive
When a water damage incident occurs immediate action is required to prevent new mold growth. When your home or commercial property sustains water damage, it is important you have the water extraction begin as soon as possible and the structure and contents completely dried out. If there is a delay for any length of time the possibility of mold growth increases and that’s a whole new ball game.
Dealing With Mold
When water extraction technicians discover excessive mold contaminating a house or commercial building, they will take the following steps to safely remediate the mold.
• Provide for health and safety: Since mold and mold spores can cause health problems, technicians bring and use the proper safety equipment to protect themselves and their workers. Protect equipment is worn by all workers to prevent exposure as they disturb the mold during cleanup. The area where mold is present is enclosed to prevent mold spores from spreading to other areas of the building.
• Documentation: Technicians will record the extent of the contamination with photographs and measure the amount of moisture in the property. Once mold remediation is completed, an independent mold inspector should return to verify mold in the building is returned to normal conditions.
• Control the mold contaminant at its source: Although this was previously mentioned, keeping mold spores from becoming airborne and then contaminating other clean areas is an important first step. This reduces the amount of airborne mold that workers are exposed to. It also makes the process of removing mold more efficient.
• Remove contamination: When mold is allowed to grow beyond normal levels, the most effective solution is to remediate the mold contamination. This will require physically removing any and everything damaged by growing mold. HEPA filters will be used to vacuum the excessive mold spores released during the process, and all soiled surfaces will be cleaned with special detergent products.
• Resolve high moisture problem: Returning the environment to normal is imperative when dealing with mold. The source of moisture that initially created the environment suitable for mold growth must be corrected. Unless the environment is returned to normal cleanup efforts will be in vain since in a very short time the mold will begin to flourish again.
